To sustain and enhance Jewish Life at Home and Around the World.

Gina Kaufmann, 38

Sound familiar?  You may recognize Gina’s voice before her face.  She has been a part of Kansas City and Lawrence's cultural community since the early 2000’s, when, as the calendar editor at The Pitch, her recommendations for "what to do this weekend" kept our finger on the cultural pulse.  After creating a live storytelling event series in Kansas City, Gina became co-host of The Walt Bodine Show.  She earned her bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and her Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia.

Profession: Talk Show Host of KCUR 89.3 Central Standard

What I do: I ask people questions (and rarely give any answers). But really, I gather people together to spark conversations exploring big ideas on one end of the spectrum, and lesser-known aspects of Kansas City life on the other. On a good day, I do both of those things in one conversation. On a really good day, I help this city start to find its way out of a conversational rut (I'm looking at you, barbecue) and move a dialogue forward, even just a little.

I give back by: I host and facilitate a lot of events and conversations at libraries, museums and public forums of all kinds in hopes that people from different communities, who don't necessarily cross paths in daily life, can get together. I try to create spaces for the lost art of face-to-face conversation, which I happen to think is the best pathway to empathy, awareness and shared vision. Spending time with people who aren't just like you also makes life (and cities) a lot more interesting.
